Lisa Bonella, an Afrikaans educator from Durban North, is a proud mother of two adult sons—James, 24, who lives in Durban, and Shaun, 27, who recently immigrated to Canada with his wife and their young daughter. Though her family is spread across continents, Lisa remains firmly rooted in her passion for teaching Afrikaans.
With over 20 years of experience teaching Afrikaans as a First Additional Language in high schools, Lisa understands the difficulties students face with the subject, especially in Durban where the language is not widely spoken. “Afrikaans can be one of the most challenging subjects for students,” she explains. “But when they start to grasp the concepts, improve their marks, and gain confidence, it’s incredibly rewarding.”
Throughout her career, Lisa has taught in both IEB and government schools, including Livingstone Remedial School, where she worked with learners from Grade 4 to 7. Now, she tutors full-time under her business Successful Afrikaans, offering personalized lessons in the afternoons and on Saturday mornings. Beyond tutoring, Lisa also provides translation services, assisting organizations with converting English documents and articles into Afrikaans. Her goal is to not only improve students’ understanding of the language but also to help businesses bridge communication gaps.
